When I’m traveling I always wear a thin moneybelt underneath my clothing, and keep passport, credit cards, and “big cash” in it. I then keep a small amount of spending money in my pocket.

I think a moneybelt is the way to go, as even though it can indeed sometimes be just a bit uncomfortable, it’s much better than having your passport ripped off out of your bag, pocket, or room. The only time I am not wearing a moneybelt during travel is when I’m sleeping or showering.

The point about keeping the moneybelt inside your clothes is key. For a while I wore a thin moneybelt outside my clothing, but I stopped that after experiences in Rome, Aswan, and Jerusalem where thieves attempted to distract me by waving something in my face while they tried to get into my moneybelt.
