Whale Watching

Make your way to the Route des Balaines – Whale Route – for the best glimpse of these enormous mammals, 13 species of which feed in the St. Lawrence River. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the largest animal on the planet, the blue whale, though the humpback and minke wales are also spectacularly entertaining. You should have no problem booking passage for a tour, but know that you can also see whale activity from land in some areas.

1. Planning

If you are traveling with a group of friends, like I was, take the time before you arrive to meet up and discuss expectations. There will be some who want to spend all day in museums and others who prefer to walk around or sample tapas. Meet with an open mind and be ready to split up for part of the day. For us, it worked best to meet up each evening at a new tapas place or restaurant and hang out discussing what everyone did during the day.

2. Accommodations

Since we were a group, hotels and hostels were not the most budget friendly options. We searched a few apartment rental sites and found a place that met our needs. Added bonus- you get a fully equip kitchen so you don’t have to eat out every meal. This is a great way to save money when traveling.

3. Free Stuff

Most people who travel have a limited budget. Read up on the sites and find what interests you and then take advantage of freebies. Personally, I loved the Prado and think it is one of the most worth-while museums in Madrid but I didn’t pay a cent to see it! It is free for the last 2 hours of each day so if you plan it right, you can end everyday there and get to see almost everything! In any case, I find spending more than 2 hours at a time in a museum is too much for me so this was a great way to see everything and not get tired of it all.

Another great place that is totally free is Plaza Mayor. This is the center of everything in Madrid. There are bars, restaurants, and tons of people watching. If you are on a budget, you won’t want to buy dinner here as it is overpriced, but it is still worth visiting for the atmosphere. Around the corner is a flea market type place where you can buy all of your souvenirs for reasonable prices.

The Naval Museum. Ok, the only reason I really went here is because it was free and close to the Prado but it was actually very interesting! We all know Spain and the navy have a huge connection (think the Armada) and this museum does a great job of giving you the history and adventure of it all. They also have some cool models and I am sure anyone traveling with kids will like this place.

No matter what you do, you are sure to have a great time in Madrid!

The capital city of the most populous nation in the world is rapidly attracting more and more tourists; it’s an experience like no other. The city’s history and culture could be experienced by visiting its Museums and galleries.

The Thai capital with busy marketplaces, temples and canals has made our list because of it’s growing recognition as a flourishing tourist spot.

Fishing has actively evolved especially in the coastal regions. Today, fishing has two basic purposes for the mankind namely a business venture and as a recreational activity. A history of fishing as a sport gives out that this sport attained its popularity in the 16^th and 17^th centuries. A study ascertains that a book was released during the same period, which sold in volumes that talked of fish folklore and songs and poems about fishing. This increased the level of interest in fishing among the people.

There is no evidence of where and how did recreational fishing originate from, but people believe it must have been started by the English around the year 1066. The Compleat Angler was the book that made fishing as a sport popular and it was this book’s arrival that got this sport into action. There is another form of fishing as a sport which is called Big-game fishing, which came into being when the motor boats were invented. Some of the major techniques included in fishing as a sport are hand gathering, netting, angling, trapping and spearfishing. The basic elements used by fishers would be a rod and a line with a hook at the end. The rod could be with a reel so that the line of the rod is reeled in or some other kind of bait is used so that the fish can be enticed towards the hook and people can catch it.

A special form of this kind of rod fishing is the fly fishing in, which the rod has a reel attached to its back and there are heavy and complex lines along it. There is a continuous whipping kind of motion which allows the fish to the hook.

The other common kind of sport fishing technique would be the bowfishing that uses the bow. There is also an arrow involved in this form of fishing which is made out of the bolt which has barbs at its end. This is then attached to the fishing line to allure the fish to the hook. Fishing as a recreational activity is used to spend more time with friends and family. So, do try this sport when you get a chance.

The blossoming trees mean that warm weather is on its way and also signifies the beginning of the working year. When to go

The cherry blossoms first open in the south of Japan and move up the country, taking around 10 weeks. Generally the first to appear are in Okinawa from mid to late January. It is usually late March by the time the cherry blossoms begin to open in Tokyo and the higher climbs of the country. It is a popular tourist season for the Japanese with many families taking a break to incorporate visiting one of the blossom hotspots with a little holiday. The Japan Cherry Blossom Association has details of where is best to see the blossoms each year as this changes depending on the weather over the Winter.

Where to go

There are cherry trees in most public parks and gardens throughout Japan. They are outside schools, offices, places of worship and Buddhist shrines. There are cherry blossom hotspots though that are famous for their Spring displays of flowers. Here are my top five;

• Ÿ   Maruoka Parka in Kagoshima has over 6,000 trees. These are stunningly lit at night, like a fairy tale vision.
• Ÿ   Sengangen Garden in Kagoshima has a beautiful view of Sakurojima as well as over 2,000 trees.
• Ÿ   Ichifusa Dam in Fukuoka is home to more than 20,000 trees and has special night viewing.
• Ÿ   Mount Tsurumi in Oita is typically picture-postcard perfect. The cherry trees blossom in April.
• Ÿ  Kumamoto Castle in Kumamoto is literally surrounded by cherry trees. It would make an amazing wedding venue!

Touring the country

The ultimate Japanese trip has to be a tour of the country, following the cherry blossoms from region to region as they open and fall. There is an interesting story behind the origin of Snake Boats. The kings of Alleppey and nearby places indulged in river battles to gain supremacy over each other. Picturesque Alleppey canals play host to their battles as they fought ferociously with each other from their boats. One king suffered huge defeats one after another. The embarrassed king somehow wanted to end the long streak of losses. He hired some skilled boat architects to build him an unconquerable vessel to ensure victory over the rival kings. Drawing from all their experience, the veteran boat builders build him a superior boat. Fighting from the new boat, the king won over all his enemies and he was never defeated. This was the first snake boat ever built and the fame of the boat crossed boundaries.  Whatever be the fact behind this story, snake boat races in Kerala still carries the thrill and excitement of a real battle.

Season

Backwaters of Kottayam, Payippad, Champakkulam, Alleppey  etc. will sparkle with the excitement of boat races in the monsoon-Onam season. Snake boat races in Kerala are normally organized in connection with Onam celebration with most of the races being held from July to September. The famed Nehru Trophy Boat Race will fall on the second Saturday of August. Aranmula boat race is held on the last day of the 7-day long Onam festival. The Champakkulam Moolam is in June/July while the Payippad Jalotsavam is held in September.

Nehru Trophy snake boat race

The Nehru Trophy snake boat race is one of the most sought-after events in the cultural calendar of Kerala. And certainly the most important boat race in the state. Named after the first Prime Minister of India, the boat race draws international attention. The first edition of the event was held in 1952 when India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, visited the state. Hugely impressed by the excitement of the event and the affectionate welcome extended by the people of Alleppey, Nehru donated a trophy to the winners. The trophy was a replica of a snake boat in silver. The race is held annually on the Punnamada Lake at Alappuzha.  Apart from the snake boat race, competitions are also held in the categories of Veppu, odi and Churulan categories.

Aranmula boat race

Held in a predominantly religious atmosphere, Aranmula boat race is the oldest water regatta in Kerala. The boat race is organized at Aranmula, near lord parthasarathy temple. Cheered on by an exciting crowd, the snake boats which move in a pair carry the offering to the temple in perfect rhythm. Snake boats participating in the race are reverently called palliyodams as they are considered the divine vessel of Lord Parthasarathy.

Other celebrated snake boat races in Kerala are Champakkulam Moolam Snake Boat Race, Ochirakali boat race and Payipad boat race.
