July 2013 – A month never to forget

July has been a month filled with travel, adventure and life changing experiences!

It all started July 1. I left for India for two weeks. It was my first real trip that I didn’t plan and it was my second time to Asia. But this time I was in the real Asia. (Well from my perspective) My first stop was Delhi, a busy city filled with endless amounts of history and lots of culture shock. But the highlight was seeing the Taj Mahal in Agra! Wow!! Even though it was plus 45 C and my body was draining in sweat, I still couldn’t believe I was seeing it with my own eyes! It was one of those things on the top bucket travel lists, so you can only imagine my excitment. I finally checked it off!!

The next part of my India trip was volunteering in the Northern regions. As for explaining how I felt, learned, and experienced, well that will have to be another few articles. But for now please see my photos below.

Backpackers can follow in the footsteps of Jeremy Clarkson and company by stopping off at the stunning havens of Hanoi and Danang City, although the highlight of the tour could well be a visit to the mystical Halong Bay.

Indonesia

Indonesia sets itself apart from every other country on the planet due to it being made up of thousands of islands, each of which is just as fascinating to explore as the last.

Backpackers who take the time to explore as much of Indonesia as they possibly can will likely pass through spectacular rainforests, vibrant jungles and lush silver beaches lapped with crystal-clear green waters by the end of their travels.

For actual destinations to make a note of in your self-made itinerary, Harau Valley at Abdi Homestay and Lake Maninjau are both brilliant starting points.

In its top ten backpacking countries guide, Ask Men went as far as to call Thailand “ backpacker’s paradise”. Once you do a little research into the country though, it soon becomes clear why the publication feels this way.

For one, the country is packed to the brim with historical and cultural architectural masterpieces. The Wat Arun temple, the Wat Phra Kaeo temple, the Wat Benchamabophitr landmark and Bangkok’s Grand Palace all must be seen to be believed.

Thailand is also very inviting to tourists, thanks to how well the country’s mass transit system has been set up and operated. This is not to mention the glorious Thai cuisine which is served up fresh from many of the nation’s restaurants at excellent prices.

Skiing holiday

Skiing is NEVER cheap and I’d be a fool to say you can go skiing on the cheap when frankly that’s impossible- well maybe not if you’re a rep or a chalet bunny, but for the rest of us folk trapped in the land of sleet and drizzle there are a few ways to make your group ski holiday slightly more affordable. As winter is just about upon us its time to say goodbye to the sangria and beaches and hello snow and apres ski.

Flights

If your looking to head to Europe for your ski holiday then there are many lowcost airlines from the UK and Ireland that offer great prices to big international airports such as Geneva so long as you book a fe months in advance. Geneva is a brilliant airport to fly to for a skiing holiday as there are so many resorts within a 2 hour transfer to choose from and with more choice comes a wider variety of prices. Before booking your flight be careful with the advertised prices as these often dont include taxes. Because you’re going skiing you will need many layers of clothing so its virtually impossible to travel with only the 10kg of cabin baggage so you’ll have to factor in the extra baggage charge too. Beware if you want to take your own skis this can be very costly and it may be better to hire them in the resort instead.

Hire your own chalet

Hiring your own chalet for your sole use can be not only an awesome experience but can often save you money and in some instances the organiser gets their accommodation for free (although its probably better to even that reduction out across the whole group if you want to stay friends). When you hire a whole chalet it is easier to leverage a great deal as your whole party can book together and therefore reduces the costs to the chalet owners and in turn a reduction is passed on to the party. By hiring your own chalet you can tailor make your holiday which means you can get rid of the options you don’t need (canapes and champagne on arrival are great but at 10am it might not be appreciated) and keep the options you do which offers better value. Within the price of your chalet the owners will often pick you up from the airport and take you to the local lifts on a daily basis therefore saving on local transport costs.

When you’ve arrived at your resort make use of your chalet owners local knowledge to find the best deals. They look after guests week in and week out during the winter season and this means they can often negotiate deals on ski equipment hire and they’ll also know the best value places to eat lunch on piste.

Ski Pass

You can save around 20% of the cost of your ski pass if you book in advance and go at the end of the season. Going in the last 2 weeks of the season is a slightly risky strategy as its not possible to guarantee great snow coverage but it isn’t guaranteed at any other time of the year either. To minimise the risk opt for a higher altitude resort or one with its own snow canons that keep the pistes fresh and well groomed even when snow fall is low.

Often times, people tell me to try to save more money before leaving on my next backpacking trip. Or if I’m unlucky, I’ll hear the opposite: “Save your money to buy a house and settle down”. Which I mean, it is what most people look forward to in their twenties. But there are two types of people in life. Those who watch their life pass by and others who live their life. And I want to be that person who lives her life. Why wait? Money is rarely the issue when you want to accomplish something. You find ways to make money to do what you want to do. And houses will always be there. So what’s the problem?

There will always be excuses to forgo a trip. Bills, cars, home, over-consumption during the year and so on. It’s all about prioritizing and having the best saving account. Once you master that, you’re good to go! It’s important to know how to manage your current account and not spend your money on electronics or material items. Wouldn’t you rather spend it on a plane ticket? You make choices every day! And unfortunately, most of us cannot afford to have everything so we have to pick!

You’re healthy today but you may not be tomorrow. The next best thing I hear is: “I plan to travel when I retire”. This is by far the worst excuse in my books. What normally happens at retirement is that you have more free time but unfortunately, most people are not healthy enough to travel the world and see all those places they’ve been wanting to see since they were young. Will you be healthy enough to travel when you retire? Who knows? Anything can happen in the next 40 years! So why wait?

There is one thing to keep in mind: Travel smartly! Setup the best saving account so you can save enough money to travel but stay within your budget if you don’t plan to work abroad while traveling. The last thing you want is to be in debt because of traveling. That will stop you from delaying any future plans you have, such has buying a car, a home, etc. I’m all for living your life to the max but you need to do it smartly. Be patient. Save your money. And go!

All in all, if you’re healthy, have some vacation weeks and a bit of money, just do it! Live today because you never know what can happen tomorrow!

Backpacking is really just a way to travel without spending too much and using it wisely. You don’t necessary have to be extremely cheap, but just watch what you spend and where you spend it. I don’t know about you, but I rather spend my money towards activities and fun doings rather then food. So here are a quick few travel tips I learned in how to save money while backpacking.

Accommodation

Never stay in a hotel, unless you really have to. It’s really just against the whole backpacking method. Why backpack and stay in expenses hotels, when you can save so much more money on other things and meet other backpackers? Hostels aren’t only cheap; they are safe, and fun. Another way to save money in staying at a hostel and staying in a dorm, not a single room. Single rooms are generally more costly.

Avoid luxurious tours

Many new backpackers start off with an expensive tour. Now they can be a great idea if you choose the correct tour such as Gap Adventures. But traveling to exotic countries with so many resources to travel independently, it really is just a waste of money. Yes, you might feel more comfortable, safe, and with no worries, but really you don’t meet as many backpackers who share the same love for traveling as you do.

Bargain

Every country is different with cultures and traditions and there are many approaches in how to achieve the correct price on an item. First figure out and understand how the pricing works in the country. Next always think of the best price in your head and never assume that there is a flat rate. Play with the price a little, make a judgment, and feel confident about the price your are offering.

Activities

From going to a museum to sky-diving. Find out the cheapest route to purchasing the tickets. Use your student card, passport, or even try to pass as a local. Every method in trying to save a dime is always what backpackers are looking for.

Airfares

Airfares aren’t always cheap and there is always a large gap in prices. Make sure you do your research, look online, go to a travel agent, book ahead, and even try booking in the middle of the night. I find most of the time the prices go down 20-30% due to it being in the middle of the night.

Now these are only a few quick tips in how to save money. Once you start backpacking often you realize there are small ways in how to save a penny here and there. Trust me you will get the hang of finding routes to save money.

Money

Traveling with cash is easy and easy to lose. Think about your options, like consider using an international bank. There are a few banks that you can use without paying lots withdrawal fees. Also, consider your safety. Using international banking is the safest and easiest way to keep track of your funds.

Don’ts for travelling in India

Don’t smoke or drink any alcohol in Public. It’s an offence according to the law of India, if caught then you may get penalized for this.
Don’t try to make any deal with tenacious touts and taxi-wallahs at airport/stations/bus stand to help you find your hotel, monuments tickets etc.
Don’t buy food from street or mobile shops as they include much oil, spice and calories that can cause your health by disturbing your stomach. Stay healthy!
Don’t drink local tap water. Always drink mineral water.
Put off your shoes while entering in Hindu’s temples and follow all rules and regulations instructed by the temple.
Don’t hire any type of transportation services from unauthorized agencies, in case if you need any auto rickshaw try to hire them from the pre-paid booths if possible.
Don’t enroll yourself in hunt and poaching activities, it can drop you in serious travel like penalty and Jail term as well.
Don’t make racial gestures or comments.
Don’t walk over books and papers as Indians treat them as a metaphor for the Goddess of Learning.
Don’t purchase any spiritual salvation or magic remedies from the saints, quacks and Godmen because they may prove to be conman and you could be duped by them.
